What Is COVID-19?

COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by coronavirus. It is mainly transmitted by “direct, indirect, or close contact with infected people through infected secretions such as saliva and respiratory secretions or through their respiratory droplets which are expelled when an infected person coughs, sneezes, talks, or sings.” People at greater risk for severe illness from COVID-19 are over 60 years old, have chronic health conditions, or compromised immune systems. COVID-19 symptoms include fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, and diarrhea. Symptoms may range from mild to severe and appear two to fourteen days after virus exposure. Some COVID-19 infected people do not develop symptoms (are asymptomatic), however can transmit the virus to other people.*1
